Is Silicone the Best Material for Oven Mitts?

When dealing with hot pots, pans, or oven utensils, it's important to have gloves that offer protection from burns. Oven mitts come in various types and materials to suit different needs. It's crucial to check the heat rating of each glove to ensure it can withstand specific temperatures and for how long.

The most important feature of oven mitt gloves is to protect hands from burns

Traditional oven mitts are made of flame-retardant treated materials that can handle intermittent dry heat up to roughly 200°F (93.3°C). They're designed with multiple layers of insulation and material, usually appearing quilted. On the other hand, neoprene oven mitts are made of the same material as wetsuits and have a non-slip grip. These kitchen gloves can protect up to 400°F (204.4°C) and are suitable for contact with hot liquids. They're machine washable and dishwasher safe.

Silicone oven mitts offer a heavy-duty option for protection

These kitchen gloves are made through an injection molding process with food-grade silicone and have a rubber feel with a good grip. The silicone oven mitts are typically rated to protect up to 500°F (260°C) and are also non-porous and hygienic. They can handle hot water or oil and are also dishwasher safe. Some silicone-coated gloves are non-stick and can be used as freezing gloves, with a heat rating of about 200°F (93.3°C), similar to traditional quilted gloves.

Silicone oven mitts offer different options for length and appearance

When selecting kitchen oven mitts, it's important to consider not only the material but also the length. Short mitts are suitable for lifting pans, but they may not provide adequate protection against forearm burns. On the other hand, longer gloves wrap around the forearm, offering greater coverage. If you prefer more colorful options, you can opt for terry cloth or quilted mitts with various patterns and colors. For a less conspicuous appearance, neoprene and silicone gloves are available in solid colors and their rubbery texture makes them less prone to showing wear and tear.
